Custom Rugs and Modern Interior Design

Creating custom rugs of canvas, referred to as floor cloths, for a professional interior design project is often a collaborative effort between the client, an interior designer and the artist-rug maker, in this case, yours truly.

Custom canvas rugs are not limited to traditional designs. I work extensively with interior designers in Costa Rica, one of whom loves to have an image or photograph created into floor art to be used with modern interior design. This sometimes presents challenges; my artistic eye may see differently than what the designer has in mind.

A particularly talented designer encourages me, “You paint it, and I’ll sell it.”

This same designer presented an image of circles as an idea for the showroom floor of Tamarindo Pacific Interiors. He requested the finished effect to work with a modern interior design and it was to be a custom rug for a large area.

Next step was to determine the right colors from my paint swatches to find the right tones for the interior décor. When more custom colors are required, then it’s off to the local paint store. I am like a kid in a candy shop when it comes to looking at and buying paint.

The second step requires thinking through how best to apply the design. Circles are a bit of a challenge when the pattern is to be repeated…it’s important for the design to be well balanced. Often my custom rugs projects evolve through the process…as this one did.

After painting the base coat the next step was to measure the size of the circles to see how to fit the number of concentric circles from the photograph onto the 8′ 6″ x 6′ 3″ area rug. It may seems an odd size for a custom rug but the measurements were originally given in meters.

I invented a wooden bar with holes so that I could place several pencils in a straight line to draw the concentric circles. Once the circles were drawn I hand painted the lines over the pencil marks and proceeded with the details.

Making this rug was complicated, it was hard, and it was fascinating. I loved it! I had to keep climbing onto the work table to look at the design in its entirety. While making a canvas area rug I find it useful to look at it from this point of view to ensure it looks good once placed on the floor.

Custom Rugs Modern Interior Design

My custom rugs, such as this modern design of circles, do not stay in  showrooms for long; this project was sold for a lovely home at the Four Seasons, Guanacaste, Costa Rica and placed under modern patio furniture.

Whether you create your own design or select a particular design detail from a photograph or image, the end result when implementing them for custom rugs makes a unique addition to any interior, including modern interior design.
